For the longest time ever, about three and a half new-york seconds* that is, the b'fiss considered using this blog as a means of political campaigning. So the way you have microphones blaring at every roadside corner in the run up to every major election this blog for the next ten days or so would only have posts blaring out in all caps and block quotes views on the political sagacity of voting for me, me and ahem me.
But then sanity took over.
*sigh*

I realized this blog is a little too fissy to be used to campaign for votes butbutbut gentle reader, dearest reader and all ye readers who may or may not be part of my university and my department bear with me for a little because the run-up to this election will only see me whining, whining and whining some more.
Why the whine you wonder. Well, firstly because whining is an acquired art perfected over millenia by accomplished politicians. It's somewhat imperfectly practised on our campus of course but it's there. Now the tragedy of my life is that given I'd perfected the art of whining on this blog months back anyone would think I'd make a perfect politician but well, sigh. double sigh.
So until the 3rd of march, which is the date of elections I shall use this blog to gust wheezily and sigh frequently. And if I don't post for days on end kind reader do bear with me. It won't be because I have a happening love life or a whirling social existence *on my check list of two, neither of those things will ever be ticked off* but there's always a fair chance that someone will do away with me. Which would be a nice thing considering it'd save me the hassle of canvassing votes and writing my eggjams.

*Incidentally the New York Second is the shortest unit of time in the multiverse. hehe. It's defined as the period of time between the traffic lights turning green and the cab behind you honking.

LATER CLARIFICATION : It's been brought to my notice that the above footnote is worded in such a way as to suggest I'm hoping people would think the New York Second is my invention. Gentle reader, bably is distraught at the thought that people think she'd take credit for something as brilliant as the New York Second, so this is just to let you know it's from Lords and Ladies by Terry Pratchett, originally published by Victor Gollancz in 1992.

casablanca : it is only my ever-undiminished love and admiration for your blog that keeps me from being downright nasty and boycotting your blog for life...harrumph!!! Just for this there will be more whiney posts about elections and the scruplous honesty of those involved :D

freaky chakra : you're a sweetheart but you're also slightly affected with amnesia. shono boss, onek toh majh ratre kotha hoyechhilo e niye ek shomoy, do you remember all we talked of? The fas which is standing for union elections now is made up of people who have been working very hard for the past few months with the aim of doing something worthwhile on campus. Whether they've done any good work is constantly being debated by supporters of either side but you and I never took sides right? More importantly I'm not standing for union elections. I'm contesting the EC elections. Which means I'm against a panel of sfi candidates but the only banner I have is that of JUDE. I'm as independent as I ever was, still trying to fight the good fight on my own terms, because I never learnt to walk away. Are we still on the same wavelength sweety?

sensational : amay dekhe mone hoy ami lal jhanda???! good grief. na actually ami only fissy jhanda. if i ever get round to canvassing for votes i will campaign under the banner of babelfish forever. but seriously ami staunchly independent, which if you hang around in the department you'll realize is the stand most people in english department take, our identity as a department is much too strong to be swallowed up in the colour of any party or organization :D

panu : ei boss, na seriously ami canvass korchhi na for bhotes yet, eto taratari decide kore phelish na...that is my most insincere plea to you :D

disktop : like I said, thank you...I got your point about the pitch-and-toss but the rest of the poem is something I need to remember now as well :)

dc : you're a little dear :)

B-fish – Wicked!

It takes a lot of courage to stand for any election.

By the way are you standing in the elections just to oppose the existing powers that be or you have issues with way things are done in your University?

babelfish said...

freaky chakra : sweetie my comment space is all yours to whine, crib, yell, or do whatever else you want with *including making your usual sensible comments* :D
But no, there was no "pek" involved. I didn't think you'd take that as a "pek", I meant it as a genuine explanation for why I'm standing despite tons of people telling me that alone, as one of few independent minded people, I can do nothing.
hmm, complicated sentence, lokeder random campaign shune my english has just about gone to the dogs.

But my stand on the union elections is straight; after three and a half years on this campus I'm sick and tired of the same faces running the show and doing a pretty shoddy job of it. Honestly I don't see any reasons why I should vote for SFI, so I probably would prefer to vote for the FAS panel and give them a chance. On that issue we will agreeably disagree but with no hard feelings on either side, right? But boss, I'm not going to defend fas on this blog, they have a blog where ideally you and any one else who is concerned should raise these questions :D

sphinx : hey, thanks...you're too sweet, as always :)

dee : my fluttering baby darling, if only sms votes counted *sigh*. I'm standing for something similar to a student council...umm, complicated thingy which I'll probably explain in some later post, rather I'll be whining away about it, be warned :D

hdpal : awwwwww!! I've hardly ever been called wicked..thanks :D
But the election I'm contesting is phase one of a three tier electoral procedure which builds up to selecting two student representatives who sit on the execuitve council, ie the deciding administrative body of the university. So my contesting these elections actually has little to do with the existing powers or the way things are run. Rather it's about the future, because I think that tomorrow if the governing body of the university takes any actions regarding the students there needs to be an independently minded candidate to speak out for the students. eeesh, kirom campaign-er moto boktrita diye dilam...I must quit on this habit of giving mamata banerjee style political bhashan, but well, you asked :D

@aragorn241--hon, she's winning anyway. trust me on this.

and babel, do you seriously not need to campaign? then i'm deffinitely standing next year, if i can. lots of things are just allowed to happen, because we don't know HOW to stop it...

Hey, jokes aside, its really great to see people actually trying to make a difference! I've done that in my uni years, and its been a swell experience. So good luck, and plan well... and invite us for the celebrations when you win :)

(PS: Also, how many bodies will be discovered at the bottom of the JU jheel by the end of said election? Just curious ;) )

umm...i think the reference to the poem was to the 'If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same"
bit.
am a completely apathetic ******* myself, but all the best to you, for having the stomach to fight

student council position eh? Kudos to you- I like people who do that instead of complaining around.
Good luck ^4 though I am sure your popularity would come in very handy now :)

"sen"sational : JUDE rawks!!

aragorn241 : hmm, maybe I should ask what you mean by *nicely*. Then again maybe I could just smile sweetly and invite you to keep visiting my blog :)

rimi : uhhh..complicated sentence in there...what did you mean by *not need to campaign*?! I desperately need to campaign and probably sink to bribing, blackmailing and fudging votes if I'm to win given I'm nowhere near the top of the departmental popularity charts, sigh...hmm *scratch chin* these are the sorts of off-hand comments that lose elections. Ach, never mind, maybe we'll just talk this one out :D

casablanca : if there was any guarantee I'd survive the election I'd ask you to keep watching this space for an answer to your last question..then again, it's as good a way as any to get you back, sooo...*ahem* To find out more about elections and concerned youthful citizens of this country/state/city/university, keep watching this space!!! :D

arka : hehe, I have butterflies in said stomach already :D
And as to the poem, I have this on the best authority, the lines referred to were
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;

babelfish said...

dee darling : I need the luck, desperately. And *popularity*? What popularity?! Don't let rimi and such like adorable yet misguided souls misguide you!! *bland smile* I am the unknowns in the department :D

acroyali : hmm, connections in JU has a decided underworld ring to it, jodio in this case it might be underjheel connections :D

quincy the quackpot : e bawa, how'd you know? *hushed tones* can you keep it a secret pleej, I'd rather not have people know I'm following the glorious traditions of da von and vonly mamata-di. Mane, er por, jodi kono din doctorate degree produce kori, loke bhabbe shetao jali :D

abhimanyu : *sigh* everyone thinks I'm obsessed with him. But I'm not. Seriously. I just think he's god. Or God, if you will.

pffft with the election victory under your belt the misguided ones who do not know you shall =D

DO let us know when the results out- i'd like to jump even if virtually so.

Abhimanyu said...

Far be it from me to criticize your Pratchett love. I've read most things that he's written.

I just wanted to let you know that I have picked up on your reference and to ruin it for you if you were hoping that people would think that the clever New York Second quip was your invention ;)

babelfish said...

dee : thank you darling...you'll have to wait till the fourth of march for results though :D

abhimanyu : good grief! I assumed everyone would know! I wasn't even going to footnote the definition, then I figured people might not remember exactly what a NY second is. But the fuck is with the world when people might think I'd invent something like that.

Abhimanyu said...

I was kidding, b'fish, dont worry. You don't sound like the plagiarizing type.

babelfish said...

abhimanyu : I wasn't worried merely heart-broken ;) My belated clarification is up and thanks for pointing it out anyway. I forget sometimes that there are people who might read my blog and yet not have read Pratchett, silly of me :D

Abhimanyu said...

hehe, next time, notice the judiciously placed wink emoticon next to inflammatory, libelous and accusatory statement

;)

abhimanyu : hehe, I had noticed that. But had I paid too much attention to it I might have missed out on this charming exchange of comments
